NDYC calls for transparency, accountability in public service

The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has stressed the need for transparency and accountability in public service, particularly in high-security offices.

This is as the group expressed concern over allegations of misconduct against Minister of Defense, Muhammed Abubakar Badaru, citing abuse of office, conflict of interest, and involvement in private business activities while serving as a minister.

It noted that these allegations pose a significant threat to Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign and national security institutions.

In a statement signed by NDYC National Coordinator, Comrade Israel Uwejeyan, the group noted the importance of maintaining public trust in government institutions, “which is already fragile due to rising insecurity and terrorism.”

The NDYC urged President Bola Tinubu to initiate a full, independent investigation into Minister Badaru’s activities.

The organization cited a previous instance where the government swiftly set up a committee to investigate allegations against former minister Beta Edun, demonstrating its commitment to transparency and justice.

“The call to action underscores the need for consistency in addressing allegations of misconduct against public officials, regardless of their portfolio or political influence.

“By investigating these allegations, the government can demonstrate its commitment to upholding the principles of justice and accountability.

“The world is watching, Nigerians are watching, and history will remember whether this administration upheld the principles of justice and accountability or caved in to silence and complicity,” the NDYC warned.
