A lot of us are guilty of skipping breakfast, either due to running late for work or just never bought the idea of eating so early.

As overly basic as it may seem, breakfast is considered an important meal because it breaks the overnight fasting period, replenishes your supply of glucose and provides other essential nutrients to keep your energy levels up throughout the day.

Therefore, having a meal after waking up might be the single most important food decision of your day. While certain diets may advocate for fasting sessions or other reasons to skip breakfast, there’s significant evidence that eating a sensible meal in the morning has benefits that last well beyond your typical morning routine.

Breakfast also gives you a chance to get in some vitamins and nutrients from healthy foods like dairy, grains, and fruits. If you don’t eat it, you aren’t likely to get all of the nutrients your body needs. People who skip breakfast tend to overeat the rest of the time—and overeating is an obvious cause of unwanted weight gain, which can lead to high cholesterol and blood pressure issues. Studies have shown that breakfast eaters have lower incidences of heart disease than those who skip.

Also, when you skip breakfast, you tend to over-compensate later in the day, which leads to eating larger and less nutritious meals that can wreak havoc on insulin levels. In one study, subjects who didn’t eat in the morning had a twenty-one per cent higher risk of developing diabetes than those who made the time to grab a bite.

So whatever you do, ensure to make a conscious effort not to start your day on an empty stomach.
