Getting shiny, thick and luxurious hair without much breakage, especially for the Nigerian hair type, is a goal for most people. It may surprise you to note that there are a lot of natural ingredients in your kitchen that can boost hair growth. Take a look at some of the ingredients you can blend together and incorporate them into your hair routine for a massive hair boost.

1. Onions and egg whites

This blend forms a powerful combination for hair growth. Onions are rich in sulphur, which can stimulate hair follicles and promote hair growth. It has also been shown to help in treating alopecia. Egg whites, packed with protein, nourish and strengthen hair strands, reducing breakage and promoting thicker hair. This duo can help improve hair texture, reduce hair fall, and encourage new hair growth when used consistently.

Preparation: Blend fresh onions and extract the juice by sieving. Also, separate the whites from two eggs. In a bowl, mix both the onion juice and the egg white. Apply on your hair and allow it to rest for 20-30 minutes before washing.

2. Coconut oil and castor oil

Coconut oil moisturises the scalp and hair. It also leaves the hair shiny, soft and lush while castor oil is rich in proteins and fatty acids that nourish the hair follicles, promoting great hair growth.

Preparation: Mix equal parts of coconut oil and castor oil. Warm the mixture slightly. Massage it into your scalp and hair. Leave it on for at least an hour before shampooing.

3. Aloe vera and honey

Aloe vera soothes the scalp and provides hydration, while honey has antibacterial properties and can help remove product buildup. This blend is perfect for thick hair and also improves hair texture.

Preparation: Extract the gel from three aloe vera leaves and mix it with a tablespoon of honey. Apply the blend to your scalp and hair. Leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing.

4. Rice water, onions and rosemary

Rice water is rich in vitamins and minerals that strengthen hair, while onions boast sulphur compounds to stimulate hair follicles. Rosemary enhances blood circulation to the scalp, nourishing hair roots. It also smells nice which makes it a perfect option for this blend.

Preparation: Soak a cup of rice for 30 minutes and sieve out the water (you can also cook the rice a bit and allow it to cool, sieve the water and dilute it with ordinary water). Extract the juice from your onion. Add water, onion juice and rosemary oil in a bowl to mix properly. Transfer to a spray bottle. Massage it into your scalp and allow it to rest for 30 minutes before rinsing with a shampoo.

5. Avocado and coconut oil

Avocado, also known in Nigeria as big pear, is rich in vitamins and healthy fats that deeply moisturises and strengthens hair strands, preventing breakage and helping to boost hair growth. Coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft, providing intense hydration and reducing protein loss. Together, these two can serve as natural blends for hair growth for the typical Nigerian hair.

Preparation: Blend the flesh of the pear with some quantity of coconut oil. Apply to your hair and allow it to sit for 30 minutes before rinsing with a shampoo.

Maintaining beautiful hair takes patience and time and natural blends from your kitchen can pull the trick. For optimum results, use these blends at least twice a week and monitor your hair to ensure which blend works best for you.
