Banksy Painting: Who Knew It Was ‘Self Destruct’?
The art world is in still in a frenzy over the shocking prank pulled by mysterious artist, Banksy at an auction held in the prestigious Sotheby’s on Friday 5 October 2018.
There is a speculation that the auctioneers were aware that a shredder was hidden in the painting. But Sotheby’s has responded that they were unaware and they had been ‘Banksy’d.’
This is certainly not the first time that the mysterious British artist will pull a prank. In 2006 he had built a life-size image of a hooded Guantanamo Bay detainee inside a ride in Disneyland themed park in California. In 2013, he established a booth in a New York market where he sold his original works for $60 (N21,810). He filmed people as they passed by sure that the work was fake since because of the price.
After the incident on Friday, Banksy posted a video via Instagram that seemed to show how he set up a shredder in the painting.

But the question that everyone is eager to have answered is if Sotheby’s were in on it. Although Sotheby’s have denied being aware of the trap.
This leaves unanswered questions as people do not believe that a painting will stay that long with a shredder in it with nothing going wrong with the mechanism of the shredder after such a long time.
