This weekend, Nigeria-born Williams Chechet, who is an impressive graphics designer, illustrator and muralist, held an exhibition he titled “We Are The North”.

This project is a series of beautiful Northern Nigerian illustrations influenced by pop art – art based on modern popular culture and the mass media, especially as a critical or ironic comment on traditional fine art values. We are the North features Northern Nigerian icons – from the first president of Nigeria, Nnamdi Azikiwe, to the only prime minister of an Independent Nigeria, Tafawa Balewa – and other things he experienced in the North while growing up.
