A new chapter in Japan-Africa creative collaboration is unfolding through animation, with Japanese animation giant, Toei Animation, announcing an investment and production partnership with Nigeria’s CR motion+ to develop a new animated short film based on the studio’s original intellectual property, Trials of the Spear.

The partnership, announced by the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), represents a significant development in efforts to build commercially viable links between Japan’s world-renowned animation industry and Africa’s rapidly expanding creative sector.

The project emerged from the TAIDO African Animation Challenge, a talent development initiative implemented by JETRO in collaboration with Arc & Beyond and other partners to identify, mentor and develop animation talent across Africa.

Under the programme, two African animation studios, Animax FYB Studios of Ghana and CR motion+ of Nigeria were selected through JETRO’s Africa Business Desk to participate in a six-month mentorship programme with Japanese animation professionals.

The studios worked with their Japanese counterparts while developing original animated short films of between five and 10 minutes. The completed productions were showcased in Tokyo on March 4, 2026, where they reportedly attracted strong praise from industry experts.

The collaboration has now moved beyond talent development to commercial co-production, with Toei Animation, whose representatives served as reviewers at the TAIDO Animation Awards 2026, agreeing to invest in and collaborate with CR motion+ on a new animated short based on Trials of the Spear.

The development is particularly significant for Nigeria, whose creative industry has emerged as one of Africa’s most influential sources of locally created intellectual property, entertainment and cultural content.

Based in Lagos, CR motion+ was established in 2024 as the content production arm of Comic Republic, an African entertainment company known for developing original African superhero intellectual properties.

The animation studio focuses on visual storytelling built around African-created intellectual property and has attracted international attention through licensing collaborations with major global studios.

The partnership with Toei Animation could therefore provide an important bridge between African storytelling and Japan’s highly developed animation ecosystem, while creating opportunities for Nigerian creators to participate in international production and distribution networks.

JETRO described the development as a tangible example of the cross-border collaboration and value creation it seeks to promote between Japanese and African partners.

The organisation said it would continue supporting new business opportunities between Japanese and African companies through initiatives such as the Africa Soft Power Caravan, branded “Super Japan,” as well as other programmes aimed at fostering innovation and commercial collaboration.

For Nigeria, the Toei Animation-CR motion+ collaboration is therefore more than an animation project. It is a potentially important experiment in how African intellectual property can be developed through international partnerships while retaining the creative identity and storytelling perspectives that make it distinctive.

If successfully executed, Trials of the Spear could become an early example of a new generation of Japan-Africa creative partnerships – built not simply around cultural exchange, but around shared investment, intellectual property, technology, talent and global commercial opportunity.
