Four First Aid Tips That Could Save Your Life
Emergencies aren’t planned and knowing how to combat health emergencies is a great skill to have. Having good first aid skills could decide the fate of whoever needs it.
In commemoration of the World First Aid Day, here are four first aid tips to follow when the need arises:
There are various ways, like chopping vegetables, of sustaining a cut, one of the most common everyday accidents. Cuts vary in size and depth of the area affected, but small cuts are only a few centimetres in length and depth.
Tip: Apply firm pressure over the affected area for a few minutes with a clean cloth and hold it in place for about ten minutes. Once you’ve stopped the bleeding, rinse the cut under cool running water. If it doesn’t stop after 20-30 minutes, or you have a previous experience of prolonged bleeding, go to the nearest hospital while applying pressure over the affected area. 2.
These types of accidents may occur at work, during sports or in the kitchen. The extent or degree of the burnt area and the specific areas affected decide the next line of treatment. For burns covering a large area, it is imperative to go to the hospital at once.
Tip: For less severe burns, hold the affected area beneath cool running water for 10 to 15 minutes. Cover the area with a sterile gauze bandage and do not apply ice or ointments. Also, do not break blisters!
This is a common occurrence in our environment, especially bites from insects like mosquitoes and bees.
Tip: Wash the area around the sting with soap and water. Apply a cold pack or cloth to reduce swelling at the site of the bite. Then, apply Hydrocortisone or lidocaine creams which will help minimise pain and itching.
Create a first aid kit box
This is a very important tip. Having a well-stocked first aid box goes a long way when you have an emergency requiring first aid. Ideally, there should be one around at home or at work. This will save you trips to the pharmacy and prevent delays in an emergency.
