The founder of the Mobo Awards, Kanya King, has revealed she’s battling stage four bowel cancer.
Kanya, 55, shared the sad news via her Instagram page today, December 12, 2024, describing it as an unexpected twist in her life.
“Learning I have stage 4 bowel cancer was something I never saw coming. It’s a club I never wanted to join, and yet here I am, still processing this unexpected reality,” she said.
However, she remains undeterred, saying, “This diagnosis has tested me in ways I never imagined, but it has also given me a renewed sense of purpose. Life isn’t just about how long you live; it’s about how deeply you live. I want to use my platform to shine a light on the importance of health equity and to empower others facing chronic illnesses to keep pushing forward. My faith remains my anchor, and I believe this chapter will be one of growth, resilience, and service.”

Kanya is celebrated for launching the Mobo Awards in 1996, a platform designed to spotlight Black excellence in music, film, and TV.
Over the years, the awards have become a staple in the entertainment calendar, with next year’s edition set to be held in Newcastle.
Kanya’s influence goes far beyond the awards stage. In 2018, she was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her contributions to music.
The Mobo Awards have been pivotal in transforming the careers of Black artists and have hosted global superstars like Beyoncé, Usher, Rihanna, and Janet Jackson.
This year, Kanya will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for her efforts in creating a globally respected platform that changed the game for Black artists.
In an emotional post on Instagram, the Mobo organization revealed Kanya is determined to attend the next ceremony. “Kanya’s story is one of resilience, courage, and hope,” the post read. “As she has always inspired us to uplift and celebrate each other, let’s do the same for her now.”
The organization assured fans that the awards remain in capable hands as Kanya focuses on her health.
