King Sunny Ade and 4 other Nigerians with Grammy nominations but no wins
Nigeria’s rich musical heritage has produced numerous artistes who have gained international acclaim. While some have clinched the coveted Grammy Award, others have been nominated multiple times but are yet to secure a win.
Here are five notable Nigerian musicians who have received Grammy nominations but have not won the award:
1. King Sunny Ade

Often referred to as the “King of Juju Music,” King Sunny Ade made history as the first Nigerian to be nominated for a Grammy. His first nomination came in 1983 for his album Synchro System in the Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording category. He received a second nomination in 1999 for Odu in the Best World Music Album category. Despite these accolades, he did not win on either occasion.
2. Femi Kuti

Son of the legendary Fela Kuti, Femi Kuti has been a prominent figure in the Afrobeat genre. He has received multiple Grammy nominations, including for his albums Fight to Win and Africa for Africa, but has yet to secure a win.

3. Seun Kuti

Following in his father’s footsteps, Seun Kuti has also been recognised by the Grammy Awards. He received a nomination for his album Black Times in the Best World Music Album category but did not win.
4. Niniola

Known for her Afro-House style, Niniola received a Grammy nomination for her work as a composer on Beyoncé’s The Lion King: The Gift album. Despite the recognition, she did not win the award.
5. Olamide

Nigerian rapper, singer and songwriter, Olamide lost the 2024 Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance. He was nominated for the award along with fellow Nigerian artistes Asake, Ayra Starr, Davido, and Tems. South African singer Tyla won the award for her song Water
