Nigerian Afrobeats artiste, Malik Abdul, has released a three-track extended playlist titled Last Summer, marking his first major project since his 2024 album debut, Sorry For The Wait.
Speaking to Guardian Music, Malik Abdul said the project was inspired by a personal experience: “My project was inspired by a love story that ended abruptly, one that left a lasting impact on me. I fell in love last summer, and even though it didn’t work out, the emotions from that time stayed with me.”
Produced by Nigerian producer Unclemezz, Last Summer combines Fuji-toned pop with elements of urban street pop. The EP opens with “Fuji Garbage (with MannytheMan),” a reinterpretation of Ayinde Barrister’s 1988 classic of the same title. It continues with “Like To Party,” a lounge pop track, and concludes with “Oroma,” described as melodramatic urban street pop. Malik Abdul said the playlist reflects “a personal story into something others can connect with, a reflection of love, loss, and growth. I want people to feel that it’s okay to be vulnerable, to fall, to hurt, and to heal, because every moment shapes who you are becoming.”
Since his debut around 2020, Malik Abdul has released singles including “Pele,” “Taya,” and “Mariello,” and has been active in Afrobeats circles as a rising artist. He said the new playlist represents an immersive addition to his catalogue, noting his approach prioritises authenticity: “My goal is to bridge my African roots with global influences, bringing something fresh that still feels authentic,” he said.
Last Summer is available across major streaming platforms and continues Malik Abdul’s efforts to expand his musical expression while engaging with his audience through personal narratives and contemporary Afrobeats fusions.
