You let them call me a killer, Naira Marley reacts as court clears him in Mohbad’s death

Nigerian singer Azeez Fashola, aka Naira Marley, has spoken out after a Yaba Magistrate Court cleared him and others of any wrongdoing in the death of Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly called Mohbad.
In a heartfelt message shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Marley expressed deep frustration over how he was accused of involvement in Mohbad’s passing, despite their reconciliation before the singer’s tragic death.
The ‘Soapy’ crooner lamented that his silence had been misinterpreted and that those who knew the truth allowed falsehoods to spread. He also criticised the delay in Mohbad’s burial and how different versions of events kept emerging.

He wrote, “I never thought silence could be so loud. I never thought someone I called my brother, someone I protected, would leave this world with my name in his shadow. I have carried this weight, this pain, this shame that was never mine to bear.
“Yet when he took his last breath in you all’s arms, you looked at the world and pointed at me. You let them tear me apart. You let them call me a killer while you sat there, knowing the truth.”
Marley, who founded Marlian Music, insisted that mistakes were made in his past dealings with Mohbad, but they were business-related, not personal grudges or war.
I faced everything head-on
Marley also addressed his time in detention, saying he stood before the justice system instead of running away. He claimed those who accused him never expected him to survive the allegations.
“You never thought I would survive. You never thought I would walk through the fire and face my people. Maybe you hoped I would stay a fugitive. You thought I would run. Instead, I stood before the justice system, spent time in jail, and faced everything head-on while you changed the story, again and again,” he stated.
His emotional post came a day after the Yaba Magistrate Court ruled that there was no case against him, Sam Larry, and Prime Boy concerning Mohbad’s death.
However, the court ruled that the auxiliary nurse who gave Mohbad an injection, along with his friend Ayobami, would face prosecution for reckless and negligent acts.
Marley under fire since Mohbad’s death
Since Mohbad’s passing in September 2023, Naira Marley has been at the centre of public backlash. Despite denying any involvement, many Nigerians blamed him for the singer’s troubled exit from Marlian Music.
Mohbad’s sudden death sparked nationwide protests and calls for justice, forcing authorities to exhume his body for further investigations.
Even though Marley has now been cleared by the court, public opinion remains divided, with many still questioning the events leading to Mohbad’s death.
