Controversial Nigerian Singer Naira Marley has turned himself in at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, Lagos State.

This is coming after he recently attended the house party hosted by actress Funke Akindele and her husband Abdulrasheed Bello better known as JJC Skillz amid the coronavirus lockdown.

JJC Skillz whose birthday was being celebrated as he turned 43 had shared videos from the house party on social media sparking outrage from Nigerians.

Not only is this a period of social distancing but ironically Funke has been campaigning against the spread of the novel coronavirus through good hygiene.

She had appeared in ads endorsed by both Dettol and the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The NCDC and Dettol were quick to react to the arrest of Funke Akindele by operatives of Lagos State Police Command for disregarding the coronavirus lockdown.

In a statement posted on Twitter, Dettol Nigeria stated that it “does not condone any breach of the guidelines on Covid-19.”

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control in its response quoted Dettol Nigeria’s tweet and stated that it has not engaged brand ambassadors as part of its approach against coronavirus. The agency maintained that all Nigerians should practise social distance in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The house party was tagged as “irresponsible” and a “danger to the public.” The Nigerian police subsequently arrested the couple and they were arraigned in court.

They pled guilty and were sentenced to 14-days of community service and a fine of N100,000 each.

Following Funke Akindele’s arrest, the Nigerian police had also issued a statement asking Naira Marley who was in attendance at the party to turn himself in or risk being declared wanted.

Naira Marley has now turned himself in according to the Lagos state police command spokesperson, Bala Elkana.

Elkana said the singer arrived Panti on Monday afternoon April 6 and has been interrogated. He will also be charged to court for violating the restriction orders.

The police say the command has launched a manhunt for the remaining persons who attended the party organized over the weekend.

Prior to her arrest, Funke Akindele had tried to defend hosting the house party.

In a now-deleted tweet, the actress responded to a Nigerian who stated that losing her endorsement may be as a result of “plain stupidity” and not a matter of “witch hunt”, said:

“Uncle don’t create unnecessary sensation. #omoghettothesaga was to be filmed Before the lockdown and some of us had been camped in Amen estate.

So we had to stay in there. So we are safe and happy!! Let’s not be NEGATIVE!!”
