The decoration goes all the way from the beginning to the walkway to the end, displaying different designs. The display runs from early to the middle of December. Kobe’s luminaire is a significant one to the people of Japan. It serves as a memorial of the victims of the 1995’s Great Hanshin Earthquake.

The disaster claimed over 6,000 lives, incurred over $100 billion in damages and put many places in Kobe, Japan in darkness due to prolonged power outages. Kobe Luminarie was thus set up as a symbolic display to raise spirits and promote hope in recovery. The lights used for the decoration are donated by the Italian government which is why there is an infusion of the word ‘luminaire’ an Italian word for illuminations.
