Did you know? Menstruation is a natural process, yet it’s surrounded by myths and misconceptions. From how much blood you actually lose to whether you can get pregnant on your period, there’s a lot people get wrong.

1. On average, a woman menstruates for about 10 years during her lifetime

From the onset of menstruation to menopause, a woman will have periods for about 3,500 days or around 10 years in her lifetime and use around 11,000-15,000 sanitary products.

2. You probably lose less blood than you think

It may feel like you lose a lot of blood each month, but on average, menstrual flow totals only about 3–6 tablespoons.

3. Period sex has many benefits—and one potential risk

Period sex may offer extra lubrication, boost libido, and relieve cramps. However, it can also increase the risk of transmitting infections. If you choose to have sex during menstruation, minimise infection risks by using protection, such as condoms.

4. You can get pregnant if you have sex during your period.

Though unlikely, pregnancy can occur during your period if you ovulate earlier than expected. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, so having sex towards the end of your period might lead to conception. Use contraception if pregnancy isn’t desired.

Globally, there are more than 5,000 different terms that people would rather use instead of saying ‘period.’
