The IT executive was reportedly stabbed early on Tuesday morning close to downtown San Francisco, according to sources.
In the city’s Rincon Hill district, in the 300 block of Main Street, a stabbing was reported at about 2:35 a.m., according to the police.
When officers arrived, they found the victim, who had been brought to a hospital where he later died from his injuries.
As of Tuesday night, the city’s medical examiner’s office still hadn’t identified the victim, but Lee’s acquaintances confirmed to KPIX that he was the one who died.
The 43-year-old Lee headed MobileCoin, a cryptocurrency firm based in San Francisco.
A deluge of tributes to Lee were sent on Twitter Tuesday night, many of them using the @crazybob handle with former MMA fighter Jake Shields remembering the tech executive as a “loyal friend.”
In an earlier tweet, Shields had said he had “just found out my good friend was killed last night” while walking in a “‘good’ part of the city.”
Responding to Shields’ tweet, Chief Executive Officer of Twitter, Elon Musk replied that he was “very sorry” to learn of Lee’s death.
San Francisco police have not identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the incident.
Anyone with information about the fatal stabbing was asked to call the Police Department’s tip line.
