As the clamour for the speakership position of the 10th House of Representatives gathers momentum, a Plateau-based Wase–Bogghom Development Association, yesterday, called on the National Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other stakeholders not only to zone the position of the speakership to the North Central but also narrow it down to the current Speaker, Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase.

The association said the call was necessitated by recent political developments in the country, especially on the zoning of the Federal House of Representatives in the 10th Assembly.

Addressing journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, yesterday, the Leader of the group, Hon. Bala Gar, pointed out that the North Central Zone of the country has contributed immensely towards the victory of the APC at the just concluded polls.

Gar pointed out that the zone has never produced a speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, saying, “On the strength of this and in the interest of justice and equity, which APC has always been known for and demonstrated, we are appealing to the leadership of the party (APC) and the authorities concerned to zone the position of the speakership of the House of Representatives to the North Central and specifically endorse the current Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase for that position.

In the same manner, over 40 political support groups across geo-political zones and political parties in Nigeria, the Coalition For Betara (CFB), on Friday, endorsed the lawmaker representing Biu/Bayo/Shani Federal Constituency of Borno State, Hon. Muktar Aliyu Betara, for the same position of Speakership.

Spokesperson of CFB, Comrade Mohammed Eneji, stated this in Abuja, during a press briefing, describing Hon. Betara as a vibrant, trusted and a charismatic leader per excellence.

Eneji said: “We are proud to unite and harmonise all forces to ensure that he is overwhelmingly supported and ultimately elected as the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the 10th Assembly because we strongly believe that he would consolidate on Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila’s achievements and deliver to us, the Nigeria of our dreams, if given an opportunity.

“His track record, achievements and wealth of experience as one of the few lawmakers, who has served in the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th assemblies. He’s currently the Chairman, House Committee on Appropriation, which has shown that he is the best. He is most equipped and most qualified candidate for to steer and to preside over the House of Representatives.

“What we have gathered here to do today is to set aside personal interests and party affiliations and to lay emphasis on why it is of paramount importance that the House is headed by the most capable hand and to say in one strong united voice that our support is for the best man.”
