13 wedding guests die in Rivers crash

It was a tragic moment for a groom’s family as his younger brother and 12 others died in a fatal accident which occurred around Akpoku- Udufor community in Etche Local Government Council of Rivers State.

It was a tragic moment for a groom’s family as his younger brother and 12 others died in a fatal accident which occurred around Akpoku- Udufor community in Etche Local Government Council of Rivers State.
 
The ill-fated journey happened on Sunday and involved a fully loaded Coaster bus and a truck.

 
The Guardian learned the occupants of the Coaster bus were travelling from Afara community in Etche ethnic nationality to a community in the neighbouring Imo State for a traditional marriage of one of their sons.
 
It was gathered the accident occurred less than 30 minutes after takeoff, around 3:00 p.m.  
   
An eyewitness, who gave his name as Chibuike, said the Coaster bus and the truck collided head-on.
 
Chibuike blamed the accident on overspeeding, adding that when both vehicles collided the Coaster bus somersaulted several times into the bush.
 
He explained that the younger brother of the groom and his wife were among the casualties.
 
Chibuike also revealed that eleven people died on the spot, adding that t two others died on the way to the hospital.
 
He expressed fears that more fatalities could be recorded as many suffered life-threatening injuries.
 
However, a source in the local government authority, who spoke in confidence, said the LG authority was alerted when the incident happened.
 
The source said the local Government Chairman, Mr. Obinna Anyanwu, visited the scene of the incident and assisted in conveying victims to the mortuary and hospital.
