Ahead of the 2027 general election, the member representing Yagba Federal Constituency of Kogi State in the House of Representatives, Hon. Leke Abejide, has unveiled plans to empower one million Yoruba residents across the 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State.

The Federal lawmaker also canvassed support and mass mobilization for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Kano.

Abejide disclosed this while addressing journalists at the palace of the Oba Yoruba Kano, shortly after inaugurating a 27-member committee to coordinate the initiative across the state.

He said the empowerment programme is targeted at widows, the less privileged, vulnerable persons, youths, women, artisans, entrepreneurs and other residents in need of economic support.

According to him, the initiative is designed to provide practical assistance to members of the Yoruba community in Kano and improve their economic well-being.

Abejide charged the newly inaugurated committee to ensure transparency, accountability, fairness and integrity in the implementation of the programme, stressing that its credibility depends on reaching the intended beneficiaries.

“This committee must be transparent and upright. We must ensure that the empowerment gets to the people who genuinely need it, particularly our widows, the less privileged and vulnerable members of our community,” he said.

Speaking on his connection with Kano, the lawmaker said his relationship with the state goes beyond politics, describing Kano as a place where he lived, did business and built lasting relationships.

“I belong to two states in Nigeria, Kogi State and Kano State. Kano has been an important part of my life. I lived here, I did business here and I have built strong relationships with the people. This is therefore an opportunity for me to give back to the people,” he stated.

Abejide said the initiative is also part of his efforts to mobilise support for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

He noted that he would continue to galvanise support for the President among Yoruba residents in Kano, while using the empowerment scheme to provide meaningful economic assistance to members of the community.

He explained that the programme is intended to combine grassroots empowerment, community engagement and political mobilisation, with the committee expected to coordinate activities across all 44 local government areas and work with relevant community stakeholders to identify beneficiaries.

Coordinator of the Committee in Kano, Hon. Seyi Olorunsola, said the committee will place the interest of the people above their personal considerations and work collectively to achieve the objectives of the programme.

He said the initiative will create a broad platform for engaging Yoruba residents across Kano State, strengthen community participation and provide economic support to thousands of individuals and families, particularly widows and the less privileged.
