2027: Come out and Campaign, Obi challenges Tinubu

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi

Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi has asked President Bola Tinubu to “come out and campaign” for his reelection, saying it would be an opportunity for him to explain his administration’s performance in nearly four years.

Obi, stated that it was unfair for a president who had devoted so much time and resources to travel to various parts of the world since he assumed office to now turn and deny Nigerians opportunity of meeting with him to render stewardship of his administration.

Obi spoke in Enugu on Thursday, during a town hall meeting with residents of the state.

Accompanied by his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Obi stated that Tinubu should come and campaign all over Nigeria to explain to them how he had deployed “nearly 100 billion dollars”, he had borrowed since assuming office.

“Your president said he would not be able to campaign all over Nigeria. Please, do not listen to him. He must come and campaign all over Nigeria. Our president has travelled out of this country more than 350 times. Now, we are asking him to spend at least 36 days going round Nigeria and telling Nigerians what he has been doing for the past three years. He must go round Nigeria and tell us what he did with the nearly $100 billion he borrowed.

“He must come and tell us where our money is. We want to know what all the money he borrowed was used for. So, we want him to go round the country. Our president must account for the three years he has been in office. He cannot stay in Abuja and expect us to vote for him. You must account for all the money you borrowed. We want him to go round. If he does not want to go round, he should go” Obi said

He told the mammoth crowd that gathered at the event centre that a new Nigeria was possible, stressing that he was determined to end the suffering, hunger, unemployment and rising insecurity.

“I am going around Nigeria to tell Nigerians that in 2027, we must elect a president who is competent, has the capacity, compassion, commitment and character, and has the energy to serve Nigeria.

“As president of Nigeria, I will unite Nigeria. As president of Nigeria, I will secure Nigeria. We will deal with insecurity. I will not be president while somebody kidnaps schoolchildren and takes them into the bush. If they go into the bush, I will be in the bush with them.

“As president of Nigeria, we will declare a state of emergency on corruption. People must stop stealing public money. Public money must be used for the public good. That is why I am making this commitment. We will be accountable and open. If we borrow money, you will know what the money is being borrowed for.

“As president of Nigeria, we will declare a state of emergency in education. Our children must go to school. We must ensure that there is primary healthcare in every ward in Nigeria”, he said

Obi reiterated his promise to generate, transmit and distribute at least 10,000 megawatts of electricity to enable industries to work and improve situation of the country.

He challenged Nigerians to judge him based on his credibility and character, urging them not to vote for him based on his ethnicity.

“Please, I am asking for your vote because I am the most qualified to be president of Nigeria. Let the other candidates go around Nigeria. I am telling Nigerians what I will do. Let the other candidates do the same thing. We want every candidate to go around the country. We want them to see Nigeria. We want to build a Nigeria where a child of nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody”, he said

Also speaking, a Political Economist, Pat Utomi, said that a research they conducted showed that “a combination of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso will deliver Nigeria”.

He challenged Nigerians to ensure that they come out massively, vote, defend their votes, saying it was the beginning of a new Nigeria.

Enugu governorship candidate of the party, Chinyeaka Oha said that he was confident the party would win next year’s elections, stressing that “our people are prepared for a new direction and a government that puts their welfare first”.

He added that NDC would win in Enugu State and occupy the lion building.
