50 arrested for stealing manhole covers, others in Abuja

Police in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have arrested 50 individuals suspected of involvement in the theft and vandalism of manhole covers and other public infrastructure during a sweeping operation targeting criminal networks.

The suspects, part of a syndicate trading stolen items with scrap dealers, were apprehended across multiple locations in the FCT, including Kabusa, Garki, Mabushi, and Wuse.

While briefing the press, the FCT Administration’s Secretary, Command and Control Centre, Peter Olumuji, explained that the activities of these scavengers pose grave dangers to the lives of residents who ply the roads.

The operation yielded a significant haul of stolen goods, including 25 manhole covers, five solar streetlights, high-voltage cables, and construction materials such as galvanised rods used in flyover projects.

Additionally, police recovered household items, generators, car batteries, and barrels of diesel allegedly stolen from telecommunications masts.

“This operation sends a clear message that vandalism and theft of public infrastructure will not be tolerated,” a police spokesperson said, adding that the recovered items also included locally made firearms, charms, and vehicles used to transport stolen goods.

The suspects, the police say, include Bashir Usman, Shaibu Ibrahim, Sani Isah, and 47 others, all currently in custody as investigations continue.

Authorities also seized three vehicles, including a Volkswagen bus and a Toyota Carina II, along with iron rebar rods, cement bags, and other equipment believed to have been stolen.

The police assured residents that collaboration with other security agencies would ensure those responsible face justice.

“Public safety is our priority,” the spokesperson emphasised. “We will intensify efforts to protect critical infrastructure in the FCT.”
