7.3m DisCos customers still unmetered

Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reported that all 11 distribution companies (DisCos) metered 111,225 customers in 2023 fourth quarter (Q4) translating to an overall metering rate of 44.39 per cent.

The commission made this known in its 2023/Q4 statutory report that stated that out of the 13,162,572 total customers, the overall metered customers was 5,842,726 with the country still having a metering gap of 7,319,846.

Out of the 11 DisCos, Ikeja Electric leads with 14,000 customers metered out of the 898,000 unmetered customers with a 73 per cent metering rate. In a breakdown of the metering by the DisCos in the fourth quarter of the statutory report, Abuja Disco metered 22,000 customers out of the unmetered 856,000 customers, translating to a metering rate of 61 per cent; Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) metered 11,000 customers out of the 660,000 unmetered customers with a metering rate of 50 per cent; Eko DisCo (EKEDC) metered 2,000 out of 431,000 unmetered customers; while Enugu DisCo (EEDC) metered 12.000 out of 616,000 unmetered customers.

Ibadan DisCo (IBEDC) metered 33,000 out of 1,047,000 unmetered customers; Ikeja Electric metered 14,000 out of 898,000 unmetered customers; Jos DisCo metered 3,000 out of 243,000 unmetered customers; Kaduna DisCo metered 3000 out of 206000 unmetered customers with a metering rate of 24 per cent; Kano DisCo metered 400 out of 210000 unmetered customers with a metering rate of 24 per cent; Port Harcourt DisCo metered 10,000 out of 494,000 unmetered customers; while Yola DisCo metered 1,000 out of 126,000 unmetered customers with a metering rate of 15 per cent.

Also, the commission reports that in the same quarter, 90.08 per cent of the available capacity of grid-connected plants in the country was utilised, resulting in an average hourly generation of 4,433.82MWh/h.
