Abia commissioner decries alleged freezing of state govt’s accounts

Says no arm of govt has right to ground other

Abia State Information Commissioner, Dr. Eze Chikamnayo, yesterday, reacted to alleged freezing of all the state government’s accounts by an Abuja court, describing it as a deliberate act of deception, confirming belief in some quarters that this is a judicial coup d’etat targeted at subverting the government and or its institutions in a manner not provided for in the Constitution.

In a statement, Chikamnayo said: “The attention of the Abia State government and, indeed, all peace-loving Abians have been drawn to the mischievous, contrived and careless ex parte order purporting to shut down the government of Abia through the freezing of its accounts in various financial institutions.

“No arm of government has right to ground the other for any reason whatsoever.”

He, therefore, warned those he referred to as “emissaries of destabilisation” to immediately retrace their steps and allow peaceful and seamless transition of power to the incoming administration on May 29.

He added that security agencies have also been alerted to ensure that governance is not frustrated and law and order is maintained, adding that there is absolutely no need for the hurry, harassment and arm-twisting tactics now being perpetrated by elements within the state Labour Party (LP), whose candidate, Dr. Alex Otti, was declared winner of the just concluded governorship election in the state.

The Commissioner noted that those who have offered to serve should not be seen to be engaging in childish grandstanding, lawlessness and brigandage, saying the state government appeals to peace-loving Abians to remain calm as it shall not be drawn into anything that will destabilise the state, because of ambition or crass meanness of some political actors.”

He pointed out that the life of the current administration remains till May 29; hence, the administration shall exercise all powers thereto to maintain peace, security, stability and prosperity of the state till its last day in office.
