A human rights lawyer and member of the Lagos #EndSARS Panel, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), yesterday, alleged a threat to his life.

The allegation followed Sunday night’s machete attack on an EndSARS protester, Kamsiyochukwu Ibe, who testified before the Lagos judicial panel on the alleged role of the military and the police in the Lekki shootings of October 20, 2020.

Her counsel and former chairman of Ikeja Branch of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Adesina Ogunlana, said Ibe was attacked and macheted by hoodlums, who identified her as an #EndSARS protester.

According to Ogunlana, Ibe was attacked on Sunday night by those who spoke to her before attacking her, which clearly indicated that people who attacked her came with a mission.

He said: “She was alone, she was not robbed, she was not raped, she was just matched, beaten and cut.

“They told her that they know her and have warned her to stop all these wahala but she will not listen.

“They told her that when she dies, she will continue in Heaven. I have made the report on my Facebook page, my client is down and has been hospitalised. I would not tell you the location of the attack in Lagos  because I don’t play with the life of my client.”

Also, a lawyer in the legal team of some EndSARS protesters, Ayo Ademiluyi, said they had anticipated the attack on some of their clients but that they would not take it lying low.

He said: “Miss Ibe is fine and in stable condition. We actually foresaw this and consider it as the first phase of this kind of attack. We know that the Nigerian State will come after us but we will not take it lying down.”

MEANWHILE, Adegboruwa has raised the alarm over the alleged threat to his life since the submission of the report of the Lagos EndSARS panel, that at least nine persons were confirmed dead at the Lekki toll plaza when soldiers stormed the tollgate to disperse EndSARS protesters on October 20, 2020.

Adegboruwa called on Nigerians to hold the government responsible if anything unfortunate happens to himself and other panel members and testifiers.

The learned silk, in a statement yesterday, said, there have been lots of threats and attacks, by those suspected to be agents of the government, upon me, especially in the media.

He stressed that he has not committed any crime beyond joining other eminent Nigerians with unblemished integrity, to accept the nomination of government on behalf of his constituency, the Nigerian Bar Association and the civil society and indeed the masses for a national assignment.

According to him, two prominent lawyers of the government have openly incited opinions against him on national television, with mindless accusations.

He said: “I have however refused to be intimidated or bend to the tactics of government to be silenced.

“I urge the good people of Nigeria, my professional colleagues in the Nigerian Bar Association, my comrades in the civil rights movement and the people of Nigeria, to hold the government responsible should anything happen to me.

“Just last night, one of the prominent EndSARS protesters who testified before the Panel, Miss Kamsiyochukwu Ibe was attacked and dealt serous machete blows, in what was clearly an attempted murder, as reported by her counsel, with very disturbing photos.

“I heeded the clarion call to serve by the government with the honest belief that the panel was meant to say the truth and nothing but the truth, which is what we have done. It is left for government and Nigerians to do the needful with the report of the panel.”

Reacting, Lagos State Sub-region Coordinator, Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria (CLASFON), Bayo Akinlade Esq, said the threat allegation is a serious indictment on the government.

He said: “I have just read the troubling allegations made by Mr. Adegboruwa SAN and I am very disturbed by it.

“I urge the Police to take immediate action by providing some protection for Adegboruwa and government to act responsibly in accommodating people’s opinions.

“We no longer live in a military era, people in government should have the heart of a servant and not behave like masters.

“I also urge our members of CLASFON to pray for our brother for safety and protection from all who plan evil against him.”
