African environment ministers tackle land degradation

Special session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) and regional consultations for the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) COP16 are expected to raise the continents’ ambition towards reducing land degradation, desertification, and drought.

According to a statement by AMCEN, African governments, institutions and development partners forum will explore renewed commitment by member states towards increasing investments in adaptation, degradation, and desertification in Africa, and, in turn, enhance the resilience of the continents to the effects of drought.

The session, taking place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, the statement, aimed to further the contribution of the conference to the region’s environment and sustainable development agenda, including strengthening efforts to mitigate droughts, assessing the progress of land degradation neutrality targets, enhancing opportunities for ecosystems restoration, identifying and strengthening synergies to mobilise funds to address these challenges.
