Agency averts disaster as fire razes kitchen in Oyo home

Oyo State Fire Services Agency (OYSFA)

The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has averted what could have been a major disaster after containing a fire that engulfed the kitchen of a three-bedroom residential building in Oyo town.

The agency said no life was lost in the incident, which occurred at Ashipa Konbuko Compound, Molete area of the town.

A statement by the agency said it received a distress call at about 11:34 a.m. through a running call and a resident, Mr Yekeen Alao.

The fire crew, led by Fire Officer II Yisau Opeyemi, responded promptly to the emergency and found the kitchen of the private residence engulfed in flames.

The firefighters, however, prevented the blaze from spreading to other parts of the building and adjoining property.

According to the agency, preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by an unattended pressure pot left on a cooking stove, which ignited nearby combustible materials.

Following the operation, the fire crew delivered a brief lecture to residents on fire prevention before returning to the station at about 12:17 p.m.

The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency and Special Adviser on Fire Reform, Dr Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged residents to be vigilant in handling fire at home.

He also called on the public to install fire extinguishers in homes and other buildings to enable them tackle fire outbreaks at the early stage before they escalate.

The agency urged residents to promptly report fire incidents through its emergency lines to facilitate quick response.
