As police intensify efforts at curtailing criminal activities, security operatives in Anambra State have arrested Miss Chinwendu Umegbaka, 29, for alleged stealing of a three-year-old girl in the state.

Confirming the incident in a statement yesterday, the spokesperson for the Command, Toochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that Umegbaka, who is a native of Isinkwo Abaomege in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, committed the offence at Nwawulu Street, Okpoko, Onitsha.

Ikenga, who stated that the baby has been rescued and returned to her parents promised to communicate further as the investigation is ongoing.

He said: “Anambra State Command operatives on July 2 at about 4:30 p.m. arrested one Miss Chinwendu Umegbaka, 29, a native of Isinkwo Abaomege in Onicha Local Council of Ebonyi State.

“She was arrested in an alleged case of child stealing at Nwawulu Street, Okpoko, Onitsha, Anambra State.
“Preliminary information revealed that the suspect is a neighbour to the child’s parent.

“Chinwendu, when arrested, initially denied knowing the whereabouts of the three-year-old girl. Further interrogation by the police made her confess to stealing the child with the intention of selling her.

“Meanwhile, the child has been recovered and handed over to the parent.”
