Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday said one of the major regrets in life is that his parents did not live long enough to reap the fruits of their labour.

Obasanjo who spoke in Abeokuta during a ceremony, organised to mark his 81st birthday said he wished his parents lived long enough so that he would appreciate them for the sacrifices they made to bring him up.

The celebration was low keyed, as most prominent personalities and politicians who annually grace the occasion were absent.

“One thing I always miss and remember is that my parents left this world too early. The sacrifices they made, they did not wait to see the results. How I wish they waited to see and eat the fruits of their labour,” Obasanjo stated.

The former president, however, said his consolation is on the popular Yoruba belief, which states that, “the dead always look behind,” stressing that he was sure his late parents would still be happy in their graves till date.

On his birthday, Obasanjo said, he would continue to appreciate, praise, adore and worship God, just as he admitted that, all those who worked and still working with him, are loyal, and also expressed his appreciation to them.

He admitted that his recorded success cannot be completed without the relevance of all his workers and aides, emphasising that they were all committed and loyal to him, praying that they would not lack in all their endeavours.

The former President emphasised that governance and values among other things must be taken seriously to get things right.

Among the personalities at the ceremony were Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, former Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, National President of NACCIMA, Chief Alaba Lawson, former PDP Governorship aspirant, Gboyega Nasir Isiaka and former Minister of Power and Steel, Sarafa Isola.

Meanwhile, Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has congratulated Obasanjo on the occasion of his 81st birthday, describing him as a true nationalist.
