Obi, Kwankwaso storm Enugu with message of Unity amid venue controversy

NDC Campaign

Peter Obi and his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, brought the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign to Enugu on Thursday, addressing a town hall meeting that Obi claimed attracted supporters who filled the streets and crowded the venue.

This event followed a similar gathering in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, as part of their nationwide tour.

In Enugu, the NDC presidential candidate emphasized their commitment to uniting and securing the country while pledging to combat corruption and alleviate poverty.
He promised significant investments in health and education under an NDC government.

Before the town hall, the candidates met with the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Enugu chapter, reinforcing their dedication to national unity, religious harmony, and peaceful coexistence, which is crucial in a region where the church holds considerable sway.

Obi framed the tour as a lesson in humility, stating, “Leadership must be about listening to the people.”

He argued that aspiring leaders must grasp the needs of Nigerians and be open to feedback regarding government policies.

However, the town hall nearly faced cancellation due to controversy over the venue.

The NDC accused Governor Peter Mbah of intimidation, alleging that the management of Amadeo Event Centre retracted their booking less than 24 hours before the event. Mbah denied any involvement in the withdrawal, with reports suggesting that the centre ultimately reversed its decision following public outcry. Notably, Obi’s statement did not reference the venue dispute.

Expressing gratitude to supporters, party members, and organizers for their commitment, Obi acknowledged the warm reception from the people of Enugu. He concluded with the campaign’s slogan: “A New Nigeria is possible, and Nigeria will be OK.”

With more campaign stops planned in the South-East, the NDC aims to rally support in the region, leveraging the partnership between Obi and Kwankwaso to unite southern and northern voters.
For those in Enugu, the message resonated clearly: unity, security, improved schools and hospitals, and a responsive leadership.
Whether this will translate into votes in the 2027 elections remains uncertain as the campaign progresses.
