The Athena Centre for Policy and Leadership has launched the Gidado Idris Institute for Governance Reforms, describing the initiative as a strategic intervention aimed at strengthening public institutions, promoting evidence-based policymaking and advancing good governance in Nigeria.

The institute, unveiled in Abuja, is named after the late Alhaji Gidado Idris, one of Nigeria’s most respected public administrators and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), in recognition of his enduring legacy of integrity, professionalism and excellence in public service.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Athena Centre, Osita Chidoka, said the institute was established to preserve the ideals that defined Idris’ distinguished career while serving as a platform for research, leadership development and policy innovation.

Chidoka noted that Nigeria’s development aspirations require strong institutions, visionary leadership and sustained governance reforms capable of addressing the country’s complex political, economic and social challenges.

According to him, the institute will focus on generating practical policy solutions, building the capacity of public sector leaders and fostering collaboration among government institutions, academia, civil society organisations and the private sector.

He explained that the centre would also undertake policy research, organise executive training programmes, facilitate dialogue on governance issues and support reforms aimed at improving public sector efficiency, accountability and service delivery.

“The establishment of the Gidado Idris Institute is our contribution to building a governance culture anchored on competence, integrity and institutional excellence. It is also a tribute to a man whose public service record continues to inspire generations of Nigerians,” Chidoka said.

He stressed that governance reform remains central to Nigeria’s democratic consolidation, adding that sustainable development can only be achieved when institutions are strengthened and public officials are equipped with the knowledge and skills required to respond effectively to emerging governance challenges.

Several speakers at the event described the late Gidado Idris as an exemplary civil servant whose dedication to national service transcended political administrations and earned him widespread respect across the country.

They recalled his pivotal role in coordinating government activities over several decades and urged current public office holders to emulate his commitment to transparency, discipline and patriotism.

The speakers further argued that the institute comes at a critical period when Nigeria is seeking innovative approaches to improve governance outcomes, deepen democratic accountability and rebuild public trust in state institutions.

They expressed optimism that the institute would become a leading policy think tank, producing quality research and practical recommendations capable of supporting governments at all levels in designing and implementing effective public policies.

The inauguration attracted senior government officials, former public servants, academics, diplomats, development partners, civil society leaders and members of the private sector, who commended the Athena Centre for creating a platform dedicated to sustaining the ideals of ethical leadership and institutional reforms.

Participants also called for stronger collaboration between policymakers and research institutions, stressing that informed decision-making remains indispensable to achieving inclusive growth, effective governance and national development.
