Fear and uncertainty have taken hold among commuters and Nigerians following a violent attack along the Ibadan–Ijebu Expressway, where several travellers were reportedly abducted and at least one person dead.

According to accounts, suspected armed bandits intercepted a vehicle on the road, carrying out an attack in a coordinated manner. One victim was reportedly killed, while an unspecified number of travellers were taken away by the attackers. The exact number of abducted persons remains unclear, with no official confirmation from authorities.

The Ibadan–Ijebu Expressway serves as a major route for commercial and private transportation, making the latest development particularly alarming for regular users. In recent times, concerns have been growing over the safety of highways across the country, with incidents of abduction and violent attacks becoming increasingly frequent.

A disturbing video believed to be linked to the incident has also been circulating widely on social media. The footage, which has not been independently verified, shows panic among Nigerians at the scene. Its spread has intensified public outrage and heightened calls for urgent action to address insecurity on major roads.

The Nigeria Police Force has however not issued an official statement detailing the circumstances of the attack or efforts being made to rescue the abducted victims.

Residents and frequent travellers along the route have expressed growing concern over what they describe as a recurring threat to safety.

Some commuters said they are now reconsidering their travel plans or seeking alternative routes, despite the inconvenience. Others have called on the government and security agencies to strengthen patrols and implement more effective measures to protect road users.

The persistence of such attacks points to broader challenges in policing highways and preventing criminal activity. Nigerians are advocating for increased surveillance, improved intelligence gathering, and stronger coordination among security agencies to ensure swift responses to emergencies.

The incident adds to a growing list of security concerns across Nigeria, where highway attacks and abductions continue to pose serious risks to citizens. For many, the events on the Ibadan–Ijebu Expressway highlight the urgent need for decisive and sustained efforts to restore confidence in the safety of the country’s road networks.
