The leader of the Senate, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, has celebrated elder statesman and Leader of Afenifere Worldwide, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, on the occasion of his 99th birthday, describing him as a true Omoluabi and an unyielding defender of Yoruba interest.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Directorate of Media and Public Affairs, Bamidele expressed profound gratitude to God for blessing Pa Fasoranti with long life, a sound mind, and an enduring legacy of service to the Yoruba people and Nigeria at large.
Born on 11th May 1926 in Uso, Ondo State, Pa Fasoranti is a distinguished disciple of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and a lifelong advocate for Yoruba unity, justice, and good governance.
His selfless leadership of Afenifere and commitment to public service remain a beacon to present and future generations.
Reflecting on his life of impact, Senator Bamidele highlighted Pa Fasoranti’s dedication to educational development and public enlightenment.
He recalled the elder statesman’s tenure as Principal of Oyemekun Grammar School and Iju-Itaogbolu Grammar School in the 1960s and 1970s, and his subsequent founding of Akure High School and Omolere Nursery and Primary School.
“On behalf of all senators from Yoruba-speaking states, we celebrate the patriarch of Yorubaland, a true Omoluabi, and an embodiment of humility, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, as we mark his remarkable attainment of 99 years on earth,” Bamidele said.
“Pa Fasoranti exemplifies the core values of Omoluabi—honour, integrity, selflessness, and leadership. His outstanding service as Commissioner for Finance in the progressive administration of Pa Adekunle Ajasin from 1979 to 1980 remains without blemish.”
The Senate Leader also praised Pa Fasoranti’s courage during Nigeria’s military era, recalling his role as a key figure in the pro-democracy movement that stood against the regime of Gen. Sani Abacha, and advocated for the restoration of democratic rule, culminating in the birth of the Fourth Republic in 1999.
He added that the establishment of Akure High School and Omolere Nursery and Primary School greatly advanced human capital development in Ondo State, aligning with the education-driven philosophy of the defunct Action Group and Unity Party of Nigeria.
“Pa Fasoranti is an inspiration to the progressive movement in the South-West and across the country. His records in education, governance, and principled leadership continue to light the path for current and future leaders,” Bamidele noted.
“As he approaches the rare milestone of a centenary, we pray that God Almighty will continue to preserve him in sound health and unwavering spirit as a symbol of unity for all descendants of Oduduwa.”
