The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested one Alh. Nuru Isah, 50, for “canning” his wife, Wasila Abdullahi, 24, into a coma, leading to her subsequent death over the “handling of food ingredients and fruits designated for breaking the Ramadan fast,” the police said.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Ahmed Wakil, in a statement on Sunday, said: “On Saturday, 1st of March 2025 (the first of Ramadan), at about 11:30 pm, the Command was alerted to an alleged culpable homicide incident near Government Girls College, Fadama Mada Area, Bauchi.

“This unfortunate event arose from a misunderstanding between one Alh. Nuru Isah, aged 50, a businessman at Central Market, Bauchi, and his second wife, Wasila Abdullahi, aged 24, concerning the handling of food ingredients and fruits designated for breaking the Ramadan fast, which escalated into a violent confrontation.”

Wakil said preliminary findings indicated that the suspect is accused of using a cane to strike his wife, causing her to collapse and lose consciousness.

He added that Wasila was rushed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) but did not survive.

The police have initiated a thorough investigation into the incident and have apprehended the suspect, Alh. Nuru Isah.

“The cane purportedly used in the assault has been recovered as an exhibit, and the deceased has been placed in the mortuary pending autopsy procedures,” the police said.
