Benue Assembly elects new speaker

The Benue State House of Assembly on Sunday held an emergency sitting where members unanimously elected Hon. Alfred Emberga (Makurdi North) as the new Speaker, following the resignation of Hon. Aondona Dajoh.

Emberga, who previously served as Deputy Chief Whip, was chosen to lead the Assembly barely 48 hours after he and three other lawmakers were suspended for three months.

The suspension, announced by Majority Leader Saater Tiseer, was over what was described as a “conspiracy to cause chaos” in the House.

The Guardian observed a heavy military presence at the Assembly complex during Sunday’s sitting, underscoring heightened security concerns surrounding the development.

As of press time, it was unclear whether Emberga’s suspension had been formally lifted before he emerged as Speaker.
