BOWEN University’s 2023 One-Day Vice Chancellor, ‘Professor’ (Miss) Opeyemi Oyelakin, has expressed her admiration for the institution as the leading centre for cultivating values and unlocking the potential of students in Nigeria.
Oyelakin, a 400-Level Economics student, along with two deputies, John Ajayi and Iyanuoluwa Akinloye, assumed their roles following the handover of leadership by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole.
She said the decision of the VC to vacate his position and allow students to step into the role was a testament to the institution’s extraordinary impact.
“This unique opportunity would enable the students to develop their leadership capacities and witness firsthand the decision-making processes that shape a brighter future.
“Within the nurturing environment of Bowen University, our values of godliness, excellence and leadership are not just words but principles that guide our actions. It is truly an eye-opening experience that reveals the immense capabilities we possess in maximising our potentials,” Oyelakin stated.
She further outlined the agenda for her tenure, emphasising the enhancement of students’ welfare across various dimensions.
Oyelakin, who proposed collaborating with global career firms to provide students with career development opportunities that would generate revenue for the institution, said she planned to inspire students through talent development initiatives, including organising leadership conferences and inviting accomplished individuals to share their success stories.
She also emphasised the need for infrastructural improvement within the university premises.
The One-Day VC commended the university’s commitment to providing its undergraduates with a holistic education that prioritises leadership skills development.
Meanwhile, the VC, while handing over the mantle of authority to Oyelakin, expressed confidence in her ability to exemplify the values and vision of the university.
