Lagos State Government has said that it will continue to promote Non-Motorised Transport (NMT), as well as incorporate infrastructure into its plans and design of roads.
The state’s Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, gave the promise, yesterday, during an event to mark the 2024 Car Free Day celebration.
Osiyemi said that the state’s maiden edition of the car-free day held on September 23, 2022, was to promote non-motorised form of transportation, otherwise known as active transportation, which includes walking, cycling, skating, and other small-wheeled forms of transportation and it was a huge success.
The commissioner, while underscoring the importance of non-motorised transport, said that 11 minutes of moderate physical activity, such as brisk walking or cycling, could lower the risk of early death and reduce the risk of developing heart and circulatory diseases.
Osiyemi thanked all the participants and stakeholders for their commitment to a more sustainable future.
Also, the Executive Director of Lagos Urban Development Initiative, Olamide Ejorh, stressed the importance of promoting Non-motorised transport by all residents within the community.
She said the event was organised as part of activities to raise awareness for more Nigerians to embrace non-motorised transport.
