Urges FG to redeem promise on the facility

Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, has expressed worry over delay in perimeter fencing of the Onitsha Correctional Skill Acquisition Centre and called on the Federal Government to take responsibility.

Okeke expressed the concern during the Easter Mass celebration at the correctional centre on Sunday and announced that the formal opening date for commencement of activities at the facility is in October this year.

He wondered why such a gigantic project with modern skill acquisition equipment was being left unprotected to vandals, reminded that the Federal Government had promised to assist in fencing the facility but had yet to fulfil its promise.

“The inability of the Federal Government to fence the centre against vandalisation of millions of naira worth of equipment installed at the facility for training of inmates on various skills is a source of great concern to the Archdiocese,” Okeke said.

“The skill acquisition facility built and equipped with modern technologies for the training of inmates is being financed solely by the Catholic Church”, he said.

He, however, promised to undertake the fencing project if the Federal Government fails to show concern before October this year.
