The outbreak of cholera has claimed about 21 lives in Adamawa and Katsina states in the Northeast and Northwest respectively. Adamawa State government, yesterday, confirmed the outbreak with 12 deaths recorded, while at least nine persons have lost their lives in Sandamu Local Council of Katsina.

The Commissioner for Health, Felix Tangwami, who confirmed the outbreak in a statement in Yola, said that out of 50 samples of suspected cases, 30 were positive.

Tangwami said that six of the deaths were recorded at health facilities, six at home while about 308 people were admitted with 244 treated and discharged.

“We have received the results of samples sent to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) for confirmation. It is confirmed that what we are dealing with is acute watery diarrhoea or cholera. Unfortunately, out of the 50 samples sent to the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) in Abuja, 30 returned positive for cholera, six returned negative, two were ongoing and 12 in isolation.

“With these results, therefore, I confirm to the public that there is an outbreak of cholera in Adamawa. People should be cautious of their movements, interactions, personal hygiene and water source.”

In Katsina, the outbreak occurred in four communities. Disclosing this to newsmen yesterday, the chairman of Sandamu LGA, Usman Nadalo, said he had since informed the state’s Ministry of Health, so that necessary action would be taken to check the spread of the disease.

He also said health officials had been dispatched to the affected communities to help those affected and sensitise residents on precautions to take.

Following the outbreak, the House of Representatives member representing Sandamu/Daura, Aminu Jamo; and the House of Assembly member representing Sandamu, Nasiru Yahaya, donated cash and food to the affected communities.

Both men, who visited the communities yesterday, prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased, even as they called on residents to avoid drinking contaminated water.
