Over 5,000 persons in Imo State have received free food items worth N25 million courtesy of the Dominion City Church, Owerri.
They included widows, orphans, people living with disabilities, street beggars, among others, while the food items were rice, garri, noodles, beverages and cooking condiments.
Speaking to newsmen at the distribution of the items, head pastor of the church, Richard Nnaji, said the gesture was one of the church’s ways of giving back to the society and enhancing the living condition of the people especially the downtrodden.
According to him, “churches should be mindful of the general needs of the people. They should find ways of not only building the spiritual life of the people but also to attend to their physical needs for the general good of the society.”
He said, “what we are doing today is one of our ways of giving back to society. When you look around, you will see the level of hunger in the society, so we are finding a way to cushion the effects of hunger by providing food to the people. We estimated to feed 5,000 people today.
“My advice to other churches is to find a way of ministering to the physical needs of the people because we are called not just to minister to the spiritual needs. So, I encourage all the churches as long as it lies in their power to do the little you can to help alleviate poverty and hunger in the land.”
A member of the church and Member representing Oru East Constituency in Imo State House of Assembly, Hon. Chigozie Nwaneri and the Men’s President, Engr. David Opara, extolled the church leadership for the initiative.
They described the gesture tagged ‘Love Revolution 2022’ as commendable, amazing and which should be emulated by other churches both in the state and across the country.
They further stressed that it would go a long way in rekindling people’s faith in God and putting smiles on the faces of the beneficiaries as they celebrate the yuletide.
“I advise other churches to emulate the kind gesture that we have done today because if all of us can think along this line, it will go a long way to actually alleviate the challenges that people are having.” Opara said.
