Cleric slams churches for preaching spirituality, ignoring economic wellbeing

Lead Pastor of Evangel Pentecostal Church (EPC), Okota, Lagos, Iheanyi Ejiogu, has lamented that most churches in Nigeria only preach spirituality while ignoring the economic wellbeing of their members.

He told journalists yesterday during a charity programme of the church tagged DoGoodFriday that he was divinely instructed to initiate the programme to attend to the neglected need.

“Instead of talking Good Friday, God told us to do Good Friday. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

“When I became the lead pastor last year, this is one of the things God put in my heart,” he said.

The programme, which was in its second edition, attracted a mammoth crowd who were attended to by volunteer professionals.

While planning to make it an annual event, Ejiogu expressed willingness to obey divine instruction.

His words: “I plan to make it an annual event, but I am still open to what God is saying and how he is saying it. In October, we have DoGoodNigeria. Anywhere you see the EPC sign on Independence Day, just walk in, and somebody will show you some love.”

Good Friday is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. Christ’s death is God’s ultimate show of love to mankind because “He gave His only begotten Son” to die for sinners.

The programme is not limited to Okota, as the Lekki branch of EPC also had Salt Project same day, while the Festac branch was planning a similar programme.

“Some people outside the church have been asking how they could get involved.

“My goal is to get as many people as people to change the narrative or people’s opinion about church,” he added.
