Coca-Cola celebrates 75 years in Nigeria with surprise wedding gestures

‎For three Nigerian couples, their wedding celebrations in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Kaduna became more than ceremonies to mark the beginning of married life when unexpected musical performances and N3 million cash gifts turned their receptions into moments they would not easily forget.

The surprises were part of activities by Coca-Cola Nigeria to commemorate its 75th anniversary in the country, with the company using traditional Nigerian wedding celebrations to highlight its long association with families, communities and social occasions.

The initiative reflected the enduring place of the Nigerian owambe culture, where weddings often bring together extended families, friends and communities in elaborate displays of music, fashion, food and celebration.

The first surprise unfolded in July in the Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos, where newlyweds Jennifer and Tunde were celebrating with family and friends.

The reception took an unexpected turn when actress and media personality, Bisola Aiyeola, took the microphone before singer Chike appeared to serenade the couple.

The performance drew guests from their seats, with the atmosphere at the reception changing from celebration to surprise as the couple watched the unfolding spectacle.

The emotional high point came when the newlyweds were presented with N3 million.

The cash gift elicited screams, tears and hugs from the couple and their guests, transforming what had begun as an ordinary wedding reception into an unexpected celebration of the couple’s new journey.

A similar scene played out a month later in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, when Princess and Godson became the second couple to receive Coca-Cola’s surprise gesture.

Reality television personality Tacha took centre stage at the reception, while singer Jonny Drille performed for the couple and their guests.

The couple were subsequently presented with another N3 million gift, leaving them visibly overwhelmed by the development.

“We never planned for this,” the bride was quoted as saying after the surprise.
‎In August, the initiative moved to Kaduna, where Aisha and Ahmed were celebrating their wedding with family and friends.

The reception, which reflected the cultural richness associated with northern Nigerian weddings, received another unexpected musical intervention when singer Ali Jita appeared to perform for the couple.

His performance further enlivened the celebration, with bridesmaids and other guests joining in as the singer entertained the gathering.

The newlyweds were subsequently presented with another N3 million, bringing the total cash gifts presented to the three couples to N9 million.

Beyond the financial value of the gifts, the initiative highlighted the emotional significance of wedding celebrations in Nigerian society, where marriage ceremonies often serve as occasions for families and communities to reaffirm relationships and shared traditions.

Over the decades, the Nigerian wedding scene has evolved, with changes in fashion, music and entertainment, but the communal nature of the celebrations has remained largely intact.

Coca-Cola said its decision to celebrate its 75th anniversary through the weddings was intended to connect its longstanding presence in Nigeria with occasions that hold deep cultural and emotional significance for Nigerians.

From Lagos to Port Harcourt and Kaduna, the surprise appearances and gifts brought together music, entertainment and culture, while placing the newlyweds at the centre of celebrations they had not anticipated.

The three weddings also provided an opportunity to reflect on Coca-Cola’s 75-year presence in Nigeria and its association with social gatherings, family occasions and celebrations across generations.

For Jennifer and Tunde, Princess and Godson, and Aisha and Ahmed, however, the anniversary celebrations became personal stories—unexpected moments of joy that added another chapter to the beginning of their married lives.

As Nigeria’s owambe culture continues to evolve, the celebrations demonstrated the enduring power of surprise, music and community in turning ordinary social occasions into memories that families and guests are likely to recount for years to come.
