A bill to alter Section 89 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) has passed second reading in the House of Representatives.

It is sponsored by Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila and Chairman, Rules, and Business, Abubakar Fulata.

Fulata said the bill seeks to impose an N500,000 fine or two years imprisonment on anyone that spurns the summons of the legislative chamber after he or she shall have been convicted of contempt.

Gbajabiamila thereafter referred the proposed law to the Special House Committee on Constitutional Review for further legislative action.
