The Nigerian Baptist Convention (NBC) has urged President Bola Tinubu to as a matter of urgency convene a national conference on security comprising former presidents, heads of state, as well as current and former security chiefs to craft a new security blueprint for the country.
The President of NBC, Rev Israel Akanji, said this on Friday, at a briefing on the 112th annual session of the church, tagged, ‘Entering into Newness through Fasting and Prayer,’ slated for April 26 to May 1, 2025, at the Baptist International Convention Centre.
The cleric expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity in the country, citing the alarming rate of unprovoked killings, genocide, kidnapping, terror, and banditry attacks.
He stressed the need for collective action to address the security situation, which has led to mass burials in several states.
Akanji attributed the current security challenges to the compromised security architecture inherited by the present administration.
The cleric condemned the recent mass killings in various states, including Plateau and Benue, describing the situation as “totally unacceptable and reprehensible.”
He called for accelerated prosecution of those responsible for insecurity and advocated for state police, citing the inadequacy of the current policing system.
He also urged the judicial system and the police to accelerate the prosecution of those responsible for insecurity.
He emphasised the need for urgent action to address the security situation, warning against paying lip service to the issue or allowing impunity to persist.
