Orders fresh election in seven days

A Federal High Court sitting in Akure, yesterday, nullified the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election, which produced a former Commissioner for Agriculture in Ondo State, Adegboyega Adefarati, for the forthcoming general elections.

Adefarati had clinched the party’s ticket to represent Akoko South East/Akoko South West Federal Constituency in the National Assembly.

The parties to the litigation, who are members of the same ruling party, however, agreed to settle out of court and the terms of settlement to conduct a fresh primary election in the overall interest of the party.

An APC chieftain and co-aspirant, Mr. Victor Ategbole, had taken the party and the winner of the election, Adefarati, to court over the latter’s recognition as the candidate of the ruling party.

The presiding judge, Justice Demi Ajayi, ordered a fresh primary to be conducted within the next seven days, urging the party to adhere strictly to the provisions of the new Electoral Act.
