A Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, has ordered the arrest of a social media celebrity, Ismaila Mustapha, (a.k.a. Mompha) for his failure to attend court trial.

The trial judge, Mojisola Dada, issued a bench warrant of arrest yesterday, following Mustapha’s failure to appear in court for trial.

Mompha is facing an eight-count charge preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The offences border on conspiracy and money laundering to the tune of over N6 billion, along with his company, Ismalob Global Investment Limited.

Mompha was arrested on January 10, 2022, by EFCC and granted bail after his arraignment, and subsequent ‘not guilty plea’.

However, the defendant was not in court for the scheduled continuation of trial, when the matter was called yesterday.

Also, the defendant’s matter could not proceed due to his absence at the last adjourned date.

During the proceeding, the judge stood down the matter for a while in expectation of the defendant’s arrival, yet, he failed to appear in court again.

Subsequently, the prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo and his counsel, Mr. Gboyega Oyewole (SAN), expressed shock over the development.

Thereafter, Justice Dada, expressed concerns over the false excuse that he tested positive for COVID-19.

Consequently, the judge revoked the defendant’s bail and ordered his arrest, before adjourning further proceeding to June 30, 2022.
