A Chief Magistrate Court, Minna, has remanded a 40 year- old-man, Ismaila Yahaya in Minna Correctional Centre for allegedly raping eight-year-old, Khadijat Abdullahi of Ayishi area of Bosso, in Bosso Local Government Area of Niger State.

Yahaya, a dry cleaner, allegedly raped the victim, a primary two pupil on Monday, September 13, 2021, after she returned from school.

The Guardian gathered that the court adjourned further hearing on the matter till Tuesday, October 14, 2021, after the suspect pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Police prosecutor attached to the court, Inspector Emmanuel Bassa, confirmed that when the case was mentioned, the accused denied the allegation, prompting the prosecutor to ask the court for further investigation on the matter.

But narrating the incident to The Guardian, Khadijat’s guardian, Salamatu Bawa Doma, said the suspect, who operates a dry cleaning shop in front of their home, invited Khadijat into his shop when she returned from school,

According to her, Khadijat confirmed that Ismaila called her into his shop, and asked her to raised her shirt up, and also pulled off his trouser and started raping her.

It was alleged that after molesting her, Ismaila warned the victim not to disclose his action to anybody, and also told her to lie to her guardian, in case she was asked that a boy from her school did it, and to pretend that she didn’t know the boy.

It was further learnt that Ismaila had continued to molest the pupil and was always threatening her not to discuss it with anyone but to keep the secret.

Salamatu explained that she was away for a condolence visit when the incident happened, when she returned, she met Khadijat lying in the room and discovered that her temperature was high, pointing out that when she mounted pressure to know what happened to her, Khadijat narrated her ordeal.

Salamatu said that after she examined Khadijat, and obtained vital information from her, she reported the case to Bosso Police Division, leading to the arrest of Ismaila on September 16, 2021.

During police interrogation, Ismaila confessed to having committed the crime and thereafter, the case was transferred to the Juvenile Unit of the Police Headquarters, Minna.

But on September 27, Salamatu said she lost confidence in the Police CID handling the case, alleging that the report of the investigation is taking so long even when the accused had confessed to the crime during the investigation.

She further stated that when she contacted the Police officer handling the case, she was told the accused person had been charged to Chief Magistrate Court 3A in Minna but stressed that she was not formally informed about it.

Meanwhile, Police Public Relations Officer, Niger State Police Command, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed that the case was brought to the command.

He assured that the command will do everything possible to ensure the accused person if found guilty, is punished accordingly.
