CSO faults authorities over neglect of Kebbi community’s only primary school

A civil society organisation (CSO), MonITNG, has faulted the Kebbi State Government for neglecting Kulu Koji Primary School in Jega Local Government Area of the state.

In a statement shared on Tuesday, the CSO, which promotes accountability and transparency by tracking public infrastructure, revealed that it found the school’s structure in a pitiful state during a recent visit to the community.

“Today, the school stands with crumbling walls, a blown-off roof, and no safe space for children to learn. This is a direct denial of their future. Over a hundred children are now trapped in hopelessness because the system has failed them,” the statement read in part.

According to MonITNG, the school is the only primary school in the community, and over a hundred pupils have been locked out of the classroom after a heavy downpour and windstorm blew away the roof of the school.

It further revealed that it has been a decade since the school was last renovated by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in 2014.

“The administration of former Governor Bagudu failed to prioritize its rehabilitation after the storm, and the current government under Governor Nasir Idris has also not taken action, despite ongoing renovations in other parts of the state. Sadly, this community has been completely left behind,” the CSO noted.

It faulted the Kebbi State Government for failing to utilise resources, including funds disbursed by UBEC to strengthen basic education and renovate schools across the state.

It knocked the state government for leaving Kulu Koji Primary School in ruins and denying children the right to education, while it spends billions on refrigerators.

“@KBStGovt has consistently been ranked among states with the highest number of out-of-school children in Nigeria. Allowing Kulu Koji Primary School to collapse without replacement is worsening this crisis. Billions budgeted yearly for education must work for the entire state, not just selected LGAs.”
