The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the timely release of the Rivers State voters’ register ahead of the August 9, 2025, local government election.

In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by CUPP National Spokesperson, Comrade Mark Adebayo, the coalition described INEC’s action as a demonstration of institutional integrity and commitment to democracy despite ongoing political distractions.

“As an opposition coalition, we salute the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its expeditious compliance with the Supreme Court judgment by promptly releasing the Rivers State voters’ register ahead of the August 9 local government election,” the statement read.

CUPP noted that INEC’s swift action reinforces public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process, despite attempts by political actors to suppress grassroots democracy in the state.

“By taking this decisive step, despite distractions from political rabble-rousers seeking to suffocate democracy at the grassroots level, INEC has proven its institutional integrity. This is a commendable act in defense of democracy and the rule of law. We celebrate the Commission for its commitment to legality, constitutionality, and electoral transparency.”

The CUPP further called on the Rivers State Attorney-General to commence legal action against the pro-Wike group for allegedly attempting to undermine the Supreme Court ruling through unlawful means.

“At the same time, we call on the Rivers State Attorney-General to initiate the prosecution of the pro-Wike group that is working desperately to scuttle the implementation of the Supreme Court’s judgment on the forthcoming local government election by all criminal means,” the statement added.

The coalition warned that any attempt to obstruct the electoral process would be met with strong resistance from pro-democracy forces, urging law enforcement agencies to ensure accountability for any subversive activities.

CUPP reaffirmed its commitment to upholding democratic values and pledged to defend the integrity of the electoral process in Rivers State and beyond.
