Danger looms in Plateau over virgin land settlement

Danger looms as the ultimatum the native Anaguta people gave the Hausa settlers to vacate a large virgin settlement, Filin Sokwa, in Jos North Local Council of Plateau State, expires today.

The vast land at Filin Sokwa in Bauchi Ring Road, Jos, reportedly belongs to the Anaguta tribe of Jos North. But some Hausa settlers bought some part and were reportedly given Certificate of Occupancy to build their houses and settle there peacefully.

However, other Hausa, who did not follow due process, went there and built houses, residents told The Guardian.

The development led the indigenous youths to confront the “illegal occupants” and gave them a two-week ultimatum to vacate.

On security measures put in place to avert any untoward situation today, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Ubah Ogabah, told The Guardian that he had not been briefed, but directed the reporter to the ‘C’ Division Police Station, Jos North, under which jurisdiction the land in question falls.

All efforts to get more information were not successful.

Also, the Jos North Local Council Management Chairman, Shehu Usman, did not take phone calls put to him.

But a source told The Guardian that some natives legitimately sold their own portion of the land to the Hausa, adding however that when the natives, especially youths, found out that the place had developed tremendously, they were incensed.

“Some of the Hausa people settling there showed the (Anaguta) youths their original C of O, saying that they legitimately bought the virgin land from the natives,” the witness who pleaded anonymity, claimed.

“Seeing the strategic position of the land and the way it has been developed, the youths showed interest and issued a two-week ultimatum to the Hausa to vacate the place, else there will be a huge problem.”

However, the special task force, Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) Media man, Major Ibrahim Shittu, did not respond to calls.
