Debt securities accounted for 76.3 per cent of Nigeria’s $6.51 billion portfolio investment in the second quarter (Q2) of 2026, reflecting the dominance of fixed-income assets in foreign portfolio investors’ holdings.
Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) Q2 2026 statistical bulletin showed that total portfolio investment rose by 45 per cent to $6.51 billion from $4.49 billion in the first quarter.
Investment in debt securities increased to $4.97 billion in June from $4.28 billion in March, representing an increase of $690 million, or 16.1 per cent.
Equity and investment fund shares, however, recorded marginal growth, rising to $1.54 billion from $1.53 billion over the same period.
The $10 million increase represented less than one per cent growth.
The figures indicate that debt securities accounted for most of the increase in portfolio investment during the quarter, while equity-related investments remained largely unchanged.
On a year-on-year basis, total portfolio investment rose by about 26.4 per cent from $5.15 billion recorded in Q2 2025.
Portfolio investment comprises financial assets, including shares, bonds and other debt instruments, acquired primarily for investment returns rather than to establish a lasting management interest in a business. Movements in the figures can reflect changes in investor appetite, market conditions and the allocation of funds across financial assets.
