Diana Chen’s growing impact on Nigeria’s auto market, others

Diana Chen

For more than a decade, Chief Diana Chen has become synonymous with the rise of Chinese brands in Nigeria. As she celebrates her birthday today, the Chairman of CIG Motors Nigeria, GAC Motor Nigeria, LagRide Nigeria and Choice International is being recognised as one of the most influential Chinese business leaders in Africa and a driving force behind Nigeria’s automotive and mobility transformation.

When Chief Chen arrived in Nigeria over 14 years ago, Chinese vehicles still faced widespread scepticism. Concerns about quality, reliability and aftersales support meant many consumers preferred established Japanese and European brands. Rather than accept those perceptions, she set out to change them.

Today, GAC Motor has become one of Nigeria’s leading automotive brands, while Wuling has emerged as a key player in electric mobility, compact electric vehicles and commercial transportation. JMC has strengthened its presence in Nigeria’s pickup and light commercial vehicle market, serving businesses, security agencies and government institutions across the country.

Her vision, however, has always gone far beyond selling vehicles. She invested heavily in local assembly, aftersales infrastructure, spare parts availability, technical training and customer service, helping to establish confidence in Chinese automotive brands and creating a sustainable ecosystem for the industry.

She also recognised that the future of mobility extends beyond vehicles. Under her leadership, LagRide has grown into one of Africa’s most recognised technology driven mobility platforms, combining electric vehicles, digital technology and innovative transport solutions to reshape urban transportation in Lagos.

Her contribution extends beyond mobility. Through Lontor, she helped expand access to reliable solar energy, rechargeable lighting, inverters and power solutions for millions of homes and businesses, addressing one of Nigeria’s most pressing infrastructure challenges.

She also introduced Gree, the world’s number one air conditioning brand, to the Nigerian market, expanding access to premium cooling technologies for homes, businesses, hotels, hospitals and major infrastructure projects. Together, Lontor and Gree have strengthened Choice International’s position as one of Nigeria’s leading technology and consumer solutions groups.

Beyond business, Chen has become an important bridge between China and Nigeria, demonstrating how long term investment, technology transfer and local partnerships can accelerate industrial development. Thousands of Nigerians have found employment directly and indirectly through the businesses she has established, while many more have benefited from technical training, entrepreneurship opportunities and access to modern technology.

Her work reflects the evolution of China Africa economic relations, where investment increasingly focuses on manufacturing, industrialisation, clean energy, technology and skills development.

Her leadership has also positioned Nigeria as one of Africa’s leading destinations for Chinese automotive investment, making the country an important reference point for vehicle assembly and electric mobility across West Africa.

As African countries seek to build stronger manufacturing sectors and embrace cleaner transportation, Chief Diana Chen’s journey demonstrates what is possible when vision is matched with long term commitment.

On her birthday, business leaders across Africa celebrate not only an accomplished entrepreneur, but a leader whose work has transformed perceptions of Chinese brands, strengthened Nigeria’s industrial capacity and created lasting economic opportunities.

For many observers across the continent, Chief Diana Chen is not simply the face of the Chinese car revolution in Nigeria. She is one of the women helping shape Africa’s industrial future.
